You did good. That looks like the good adjustable carb that I had on an 1811 that I once had. Here are some pics that might help you out a little. It looks like the choke is 180* off. What is the spec# on your engine? I think it should be 24506.

The choke cable on mine went towards the front and then back to the carb.

Here are some linkage shots for ya.

Here's what the pto should look like. Looks like yours might be off of a green tractor because it's a double. I would try and adjust the air gap first to see if that helps it.

Like everybody said, give it a good service, pull the carb, clean and rebuild it and you will have one of the best built GT's Cub made.

Thanks guys, I'm sure I'll be happy with it! After I got it going last night, I let it run for about half an hour to charge the battery and let it warm up. Went out this morning before plowing snow for work and tried to start it up; took a crank or two, but she fired right up! I did take a better look in the gas tank and decided to drain what "gas" was in there. Talk about brown gas There's also a bunch of buildup "crap" at the bottom of the tank. Any suggestions for how to get it out?

I figured the headlight would be an easy one to fix. As for the hydro, when I looked at it it was low, so much so that when I pulled the dipstick, there were air bubbles on the fluid. I topped it off when I got it home but I will be doing a fluid/filter change, as well. And the cooling fan is actually fully intact, that's something I checked on site

Will do, I'll let everyone know how it works. I hope to get a little tinker time this morning before the boss gets off work this afternoon

Now that I've got it and nobody here's gonna snag it from me, I got it in Warsaw, IL

The PTO issue is probably just an adjustment problem that can be fixed in short order. No matter, for $350 you got the deal of the day!
The PTO isn't on the top of the list right now. When we hooked the deck up, it stopped spinning until I turned the PTO on so it'll have to do until spring.

Governor to carb linkage is definitely incorrect (as mentioned above) and also the choke lever is wrong (also already stated). It may not be the original carb, but the paint seems to match the rest of the engine, so I'd say it is. Someone probably disassembled it and put it back together wrong. I agree, you got the deal of the day! Probably going to have to find the correct PTO.

Here's a pic of the carb and such on mine:
Where are you seeing the governor linkage as being incorrect? I tried comparing our pics, and it looks like one end of the governor arm has 2 holes and we're the same there but the other end has 6 and I can't see where ours differ

Ok, after some thinking, manual searching, and tinkering, I figured out that what's circled in red below was on backwards. So I flipped it, and adjusted it till I felt that it was right. So, did I get it right?

Yep, you are correct. The lever from the governor to the carb looks like it is wrong also.

Update: as of right now, after an oil change, oil filter change, removing the fuel tank and cleaning it out, topping the tranny fluid, and fresh fuel, it runs like a new tractor. Starts right up, no whine in the hydro (after it warms up), and the throttle works like it should. I am THOROUGHLY impressed with this machine. I can't wait to make it do some work!

Look at the pic I posted. Your linkage looks like a piece of wire, bent to work.

Glad you got it running good!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
