Default 1A tiller on a 149?

Hello All, I tried doing a search but I'm coming up empty. I just saw a 34" 1A tiller on Craigslist for a great price but I'm not sure if it will fit my 149. What is the ideal size for this model?

Thanks,

Hooligan

Thanks Bill but I'm still confused, this helps me understand that the 1A is not a fixed width tiller. I did read in the archives that belt width's are also different. Is the 1A mule drive belt width the same as my 149's front PTO?

EDIT: I just check the tiller belt info under the technical section. This leads me to believe the 1A will work on either a NF or WF, the only difference is the mule drive itself as well as the pulley widths on the drive and tiller gearbox. Is this correct?

used a 1/2" wide belt for PTO driven implements....

Thus, the mule drive pullies for these tractors is 1/2" wide also. You have to make sure when using a WF mule drive, that the mule drive pullies go 'straight to the back'. Mule drives that were intended to be used with 44A and 50A mower decks are 'angled' so that they are lined up with the center pulley on the mower deck...which is 'offset'. If you use an 'angled' mule drive with a tiller, it will chew the side up on the (expensive) LONG belt....ruining it/causing it to break.

The mule drive pictured in the 'Tilling with a Cub cadet' thread was for an 'A' series deck. I disassembled the mule drive, clamped the pulley hangers in a bench vice to 'straighten them', and reassembled the mule drive.

A Model 1, 1A, and Model 2 tiller will fit any NF and WF Cub Cadet >Except for the 'Quietline' Model 1100 tractor.

The '82' series and newer tractors used a 5/8" wide belt for PTO driven implements.

Any of the Model 1, 1A, and Model 2 tillers will also fit an IH built 82 series tractor with the a Cast Iron transaxle, if the 'correct' 5/8" lower pulley is on the tiller gearbox...however, the Model 2B is the 'correct' tiller for the 82 series tractors with the C.I. transaxle. Note: An 82 series mule drive will also have the 'angled pullies' because the 44C and 50C mower decks had offset center pullies.
WOW Great info WildBill!

Thank you!

Yes Sir, thanks Wild Bill. Now if I can just get ahold of the seller I may have a tiller to add to my collection.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
