Andy I just saw this and there's a guy in lake wales that has a 154 that I looked at the other day with a big Woods deck on it. He may still have it, he lives on Canal road and I think it was 1000 and decent. I will try to find his number or is this the guy you're talking to?

We brought a 154 into the shop a few years back that had the PTO clutch tore out. It was going to cost so much to fix it the guy wouldn't do it. It seems there were 2 different kits needed from Case-IH. Another weak point I seem to remember on 154's is the frame breaking where it hooked to the transmission. Does the one you are looking at have an IH deck or has it been replaced with a Woods deck? I've always preferred the 154 style to a regular Cub or Cub lo-boy for mowing. It seems they have more power. And correct me if I am wrong didn't the deck pull from somewhere besides the rear end making changing gears while mowing easier? I may be wrong as it has been close to 20 years since I have mowed with a 154.

have had mine for a few years came with a mower deck but never used it. did some modifications to pto to slow it down and hung a 7 foot dearborn sickle mower on it. like the other guys said it has a gap between 2nd and 3rd gear thats a little annoying. has turf tires on rear with chains and handles a 6 foot blade on the three point pretty good in snow and ok in gravel. have read on another site some one milled the head a bunch and gained a bunch of power havent tried it. and yes pto turn backwards from regular farm tractors and is like 1800 rpm

I haven't been on here in a few days, and just saw this thread! I have a 154 and really love it, and I did a technical write up on it about a year ago here, this is the link to it:
http://www.onlycubcadets.net/forum/s...ad.php?t=22765 The ebay seller you mentioned has his own website, hamiltonbobscubs.com, and it is a great resource for anyone who has one of these machines. as far as the one you're going for, if it's running, 800 is a STEAL, even with the bad pto. and as far as the problems with the pto and clutch go, as long as you are paying attention to those parts and maintaining them, you shouldn't have any problems. good luck, hope your fleet expands! ![]()

I bought my house last year and a 154 came with the deal. It has the 60" (59" technically) I used it to mow all summer and it is quite a machine!!! I find that 2nd gear is perfect for mowing, unless you are in an open field then it feels a bit slow. I have let the grass get away a few times, and even cut some of the ditch across the road that does not always get cut, and they have more power than people give them credit for. I wanted to get a plow for it this winter, and came across a deal on one with all options (creeper, dual brakes, 3point, dual hydro valve, wheel weights) and a number 60" mower, 54 plow and Cozy cab!! My plan is to put all the options on my cub and sell the other one. And this thing is a tank for plowing!!! Even without chains here in flatland.
The 154 and 185 are identical, the 184 has an electric PTO clutch and the drive clutch is closer to the engine. The 184 is definitely superior to the early models. The drive clutch in the 154/85 must of been designed by a engineer school dropout!! That being said I love mine and if you look for deals on clutch parts they are out there. Hamiltonbobscubs.com seems to be a good place for parts. now for pics.... pulling my little yard cart ![]() image by yamaguy, on Flickr it pulls this well, but backing really pushes the clutch... ![]() image by yamaguy, on Flickr put my cat 0 rear blade on to pull the snow from in front of the garages ![]() image by yamaguy, on Flickr it will push mountians of snow (not pictured) ![]() image by yamaguy, on Flickr I'll never plow without a cab again if I have a choice. even on a few -10*F days, I was warm with just a long sleeve tee and hoodie (no heat in cab) With all the snow this year, I had piles as tall as the cab (6' ish)!!! ![]() image by yamaguy, on Flickr

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
