Well my 1974 Cub Cadet 86 sat for awhile and i finally have got her back to running and mowing. I did a little carb clean and replaced the rear oil seal and now she is running perfect!
Quick question, my front rims are rusty, what is the best way to remove the rust but keep the paint intact? If there isn't a way to do so, what is the best way to remove the rust and paint the rims? |

![]() As per your question. There isn't any paint to keep if it's rusty, best thing would be to remove the tires and have the rims sand blasted. I at one time had no way of removing the tires so I just blasted the wheels and taped off the tires and painted. Blasting isn't going to hurt the tires, but your only going to get at what is exposed. If it were me, do it right the first time.

before paying to have the tires demounted and rims blasted and repainted, take a wire brush to the rims.
You might find there are rust pits all over that will be enlarged upon sandblasting. If you do not want the dimpled surface, you might want to entertain new rims. |

Use a 4" angle grinder with a wire brush attachment to clean the rust off then wipe them clean and check for pits from the rust....my guess is you could at this point prime them with Rust-oleum then a good paint and you should be ok...You can full the pits if they are too bad to save on buying new rims....

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
