Default 1641 not charging

I am trying to figure out how to check out my charging system on my newest Cub purchase. It is a 1641 with a Briggs Vanguard engine. The voltage reading across the battery when running is only about 12.4 volts at an idle and 12.48 above an idle. I am not familiar with the charging system on this engine. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks
Bob

I think I posted this question in the wrong location. Not used to navigating around the site. I wanted to post this in the Cub/MTD section. I have 2 Cubs, a 1650 and this newer 1641. Both are about the same tractors, just about 10 years or so apart. Both are hydros with hyd. deck lifts. The V twin in the 1641 is so much smoother than the single 16 Kohler in the 1650. The 1650 has a 50" mower deck and the 1641 has a 48" deck. It is going to be hard to figure out which one to mow the lawn with this year.

Bob:

I am NOT familiar with your model of Cub. However, to check the V/R in principle would be the same as the older Cubs.

Your tractor has a B & S motor in it. I suspect the issue lies at the V/R that is somewhere inside the shrouds.

Here is the test procedure for the older Cubs....... TEST

According to the Parts Diagram the V/R has two connectors to it. One connector (with two wires) come from the Charging Coils and the other one (single red/white wire) goes to the wiring harness.

If you can get access to this to check it out, the above test would be the same.

Now, this assumes, that the V/R is properly grounded and has zero ohms resistance between it's case and the Battery negative terminal.

Thanks for your reply! I will do some checking. I am trying to find a wiring diagram for the charging circuit. I am not sure which terminals on my regulator to check, as they are not the same as in the diagram you sent.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
