I did it just as a test to be sure everything was working right since I suspected my gas soaked float was the problem. Just peace of mind before reassembly.
Ok, but keep in mind holding it up with a finger is completely different from floating on gas.....

.

Turns out it was the float, everything is good now. I ran less than a minute though because there was a lot of gas mixed with the oil.

The float being bad turned out to be a good thing. The engine started and ran 4 seconds then quit. While diagnosing that problem the ignition switch broke, so I needed to order a new switch. While removing the ignition switch I noticed that the engine moved quite a bit, sort of as if it were mounted on rubber. That's when I saw that it was missing the 2 rear engine mount spacers and bolts. The starter had been going out for a few years, so it seemed like a great idea to pull the engine and replace the starter, make new engine mount spacers, and replace a few of the shroud bolts that had become misplaced through the years. When I took out the cv joints they contained dried and cracked grease, so I cleaned and regreased them. After putting the engine back in I was finally able to crank it and determine I had a problem somewhere in the carb. Quite a bit of time and money for a float, but I was able to perform some much needed and overdue maintenance and really learned a lot about ol Cubby.

Thanks to everyone and this forum for all the great information it contains

Thanks guys! I'll get some pics of it posted once the weather breaks and I get my yard (weeds) mowed down. I haven't mowed for 2 weeks... got it running today but couldn't mow because it rained all day.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
