I think you may be referring to the reed valve, or "umbrella valve" as the parts book calls it. And no, that is not necessarily bad. If it does have gas in the oil, it will puke through a good valve. I understand that you own a lot of these tractors, but just because none of yours went bad, doesn't mean that lots of them don't. It just means your lucky. On the forum, there have been close to 15 fuel pumps fail this year alone, that filled the crankcase.

So the update is that the oil did smell like gas, and showed up a half to three quarters of an inch above the hatch marks. So oil change, check umbrella valve, and new fuel pump it is. Has anyone used the replacement pumps that they sell on ebay? There is a plastic looking one for thirty something and ac delco brand metal housing pump for sixty- four. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

And that's this forum alone, not even counting people that have the issue and don't post about it or people from other forums.Quote:

I've used the Stens and the Primeline pumps with no problems, and I've used the Kohler ones. Didn't know AC Delco had one......

Update. So I changed oil, plugs, cleaned the breather out, and bypassed the fuel pump. Mowed for about an hour and the old girl never missed a beat. No more oil in the breather, and no more smoke. So now I will order a new fuel pump, and enjoy my new dream mower.
Many thanks to everyone for the help.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
