This is my first run at a tractor with Hydrostatic drive a 149 and I guess I am just used to gears. I have noticed that when I start out going forward at a slow speed after moving for a few feet the tractor seems to take off faster without moving the control lever. Has anyone experienced this? What is the cause and how to correct is good information to know!

the trunnion on the hydro pump is probably worn out. its an easy fix. all you have to do is pull the rear fender pan, and find the square piece with the two springs and endcaps on them. most of the time, those end caps wear out two grooves in the outer edge of that square bracket. this will cause your hydro to be jumpy. if you want to fix it the right way, take that bracket off, remove the springs, build up the worn grooves with weld then file away till they are true again. but, if your looking for a quick down and dirty fix that WORKS, weld some key stock ontop of the existing square piece. it will cover the grooves and keep the springs and endcaps from moving. it works. i use the keystock method on all my worn out trunnion tractors because its way easier.

You could look at the "friction disk" that applies friction to the lever handle linkage, so that it stays where you put it, also.

When the tractor accelerates wildly on level ground, it's due to a loose friction control on the hydro lever. When speed varies dramatically going up and down hills, it's usually weak springs or wear on the trunnion.
At least that's been my experience, limited though it may be.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
