I think I would first decide how big you need this to be for the use that you have in mind. Then determine what would be the correct material to build it from, don't forget that it needs to not only be able to support whatever the load is but it needs to be able to support it's own weight as well.

Here's the carry-all I built. I built it with a sleeve hitch hookup. The frame was 1"x1.5" tubing and angle iron. It was hinged at the back so it would dump which made it handy for hauling dirt and grass clippings. I no longer have it.
