Update-

I had my deck welded up a bit, and the tractor does start and run after replacing the Fuel Filter.

However-something has changed in the dynamics of all this- and I am going to have to check and make sure I did not do anything when I pulled off the top plate with cables that is over the carb.

The tractor is really hard to start- if I give it any throttle or choke- it will not start. Last night- it took about 3 minutes for it to finally catch.

I know the gasket between top(or side) of carb and its plate for air filter is in tough shape. I did pull the carb off last week, and I was 99% sure I connected all cables back the way they were. I did watch a video posted here last week of a kohler carb rebuild- it didn't look like rocket science, and might be something I'd like to do.

Just a quick followup-

I mowed last night, took a while to start, and it died halfway through. In my attempts to restart- I pulled Air filter and all- and wanted to see what linkage was doing. Found gas spewing out of carb.

I pulled the carb off tractor and unscrewed the fuel solenoid to see what was in the bowl... YIKES! The bowl was full of black residue- and it was just clean a week ago when I replaced fuel pump. Once I cleaned that all out- I put it back and it runs better now than it ever did- idles much smoother, and doesn't run rough at full power.

I do need to replace the rubber fuel line elbow where the steel line mates near the carb, I also need to replace the gasket between end of carb, and the steel plate that all the linkage runs to.

It appears I cured the cold start issue-as I might have had something bonked when I put the linkage back together last week. There is a small double ended 90 degree "lever" that mounts on the front edge of carb side plate where the choke linkage appears to move the governor(??) linkage- something was amiss there- and I figured it out immediately upon re-assembly.

A couple of years ago- the tractor would barely stay running- and then I'd found all my fuel in tank had vanished. Quickly figured out there was a leak above left rear wheel- just outside the tank. Most of my line was badly weather cracked, etc. Are there any differences in Fuel Line to use- different grades? With the black residue getting into my fuel bowl- I am curious if my line is breaking down again?

Chris

Just my 2 cents but I would pull the fender pan, remove every bit of fuel line all the way from the tan to the carb and replace it. Go to a decent auto parts store and get some good quality gas line. If the tank is cruddy clean it out also. This is also a good time to clean the crap that builds up around the trans.

Yup!
Did it two yrs ago- what prompted my question- was when I pullled line off the fuel pump and filter, I noticed black stuff on the barbs. I thought I did it with fuel line.

Can't think of any other place that you would get "black stuff" from other than the inside of the fuel lines. Todays gas is hard on fuel line.

SAE spec J30R7 is what you need.

Thanks All-

The good news- is the tractor started up from cold with NO effort- and just as normal- so I guess my linkage findings were correct.

I can't believe how smooth she idles and runs now- I just might have to sink some money into her and not get a replacement after all.

Replace front tires, replace fuel line, and find me a new(used) deck for a lot less!!!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
