Just got a 149 having a heck of a time with brakes/transmission set up can any one help. If engine is not running brakes work great, once engine runs brakes don't work at all.

That doesn't make any sense. The engine has nothing to do with a mechanical brake. I'd say the hrdrostat needs the linkage set so that it goes to neutral when the brake is set.
On another note..... what were you doing with it that you found this out? Just trying to use the parking brake? Or were you trying to drive it using the brake like a clutch? |

I agree with J-Mech. The linkage needs adjusted or you need to repair the trunion.
There is a service chassis service manual in the tech section you can download or you can buy a paper copy from Binder Books.

It has driven me nuts, yes I used the manual, however, I just read a post and I will try that, I don't believe I had it in neutral when setting brakes, I will make sure of that. I agree the brakes should not have anything to do with transmission running, I'm not used to having a clutch, brake and all with brake pedal. Thanks for your help
What the heck is the trunion?? |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
