Default New Guy from MI

Hi all, been lurking around here for a few days trying to get educated. I have a IH quiteline 1000 that was given to me by my father. She's in ok shape I guess but has always run like a champ after it's good and warmed up. My Dad has had it as long as I can remember but wasn't the original owner, I'd guess he picked it up in the mid to late 80's. It has looked just like it does today for as long as I can remember, aside from the rusty blade. I know the deck was rotted and has been gone for years. Assuming the side panels are long gone as well.

So long story short after last winter we've decided to get a snow blower but I wanted to explore my options with the Cub before I dump $800-1000 financing a stand alone 2 stage. I'm sure the plow would have done better with wheel weights and chains but we regularly get 2-4 ft drifts in front of the barn and garage and last years snow fall was just too much for her.

I have no desire to "restore" it but more clean her up stop the rust and keep it as a work horse around the property. I'd love to get my hands on a tiller, creeper gear or other implements and accessories at some point as well. I've considered the self powered tow behind tillers etc but they're $$ and I like the idea of the original IH units.

I've never used the PTO but it does click when I flip the switch and I see the plate move so that's a good sign I hope. The front pulley does spin all the time though but spins free after I shut it off.

So on to my questions... yes I've used the search button already and may have missed a lot of this so go easy on me.

1. I'd like to get a QA36 snow thrower (I've read the QA42 is a bit much for a 10hp) What else do I need beside the blower and a belt or is it all self contained? Seems $200 is considered a fair price for one?

2. After a standard cleaning and tune up what are some common things to check. I've seen mention of mounts etc. but mainly concerning the PTO. Also as you can see in the pictures I need to address the wiring.

3. Is there a good list of all the accessories/attachments that were available? Did they make a 2 stage blower?

4. Is a 1000 going to be able to handle everything I'd like to do or would I be better of trying to find a 1200 or bigger? Perhaps that already has a blower, tiller and such.

Thanks in advance, love the site!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
