If you can get it for $50 I think you'd be stupid to walk away from it, if you already have a gt then keep it and tinker with the Lt. For what its worth I paid $50 for the one I have with no deck but it ran. Hard to tell what model it is but there should be a tag under the seat and unlike the bigger cubs where you have to look up the kind code this tag will say model###, could be a 76 or an 81 or even a 111 which would have an 11hp engine and a low production number of 6401.

Get it t while you can. Last year there was a 282 on local c-list I saw it right before I went to go mow. When I called an hr later it was GONE! Still get mad at myself for not calling ! The guy practically gave it away!

I've been following this thread and I have to agree, I think an LT is the wrong direction compared to what you have for mowing 2.5 acres. I would get nothing smaller than 48", preferably a 54" or 60" cut. I'm all for seat time, but I don't have time to spend 4 hrs a week mowing that much ground at 38" (even less when you count overlap) a pass. Not to mention it's probably not the smoothest ground, small wheels fall in small holes and go kaboom in large ones. Your kidneys may thank you for a larger tractor. I understand you have a few vertical shafts motors waiting on a donor, but maybe they would be better used to barter for the right motor for a proper sized mowing machine.

That said, there are pull behind mowers out there. They take vertical shaft motors, maybe find one with a bad motor and put it behind a machine you already have. You get seat time on any tractor you pick for the day and you don't mess up the pretty paint or deck. As a bonus, usually they can be offset. If your in a rush, you can mow with the tractor your riding and the pull behind at the same time.

its funny that you mention that; because that was the first idea, making a pull behind.. i know this sounds real stupid, but i have a working 50c, with gt spindles and all done up to a tee but thats one of the show tractors, and really dont want to mow with it...i do have stack of decks (probably like 12-15) down in the old cattle shed at my dads place... if anything maybe a sleeve hitch mounted finish deck?? guys trust me, i would just rescue an another GT in a heartbeat, but i already have a problem with space..my wife and i and 3 kids bought this house 1 yr ago with 2 car garage, and im already having to store stuff at my old mans place..so until i get a pole shed built for my shop and GTs, the only way i could justify another was from using an existing engine, and all that happy horse s%$t...but yes, i do agree... takes little over an hour with a 46" deck as it was... definitely have to be a sleeve hitch vs pull behind, too many trees and such..... you guys are great, i appreciate all the help and ideas.... still want that little cadet just for the hell of it...where will i hide it i have a problem

Don't be afraid to mow with a restored tractor, I mow with my 108 and when I'm done it still cleans up like new.

i greatly appreciate it..

also, i suppose i should mention i have 2.5 acres to mow, trees, a river, but for the most part flat...

i have 5 vintage, heavy garden tractors (a '75 cub 1250 which is my favorite, an old monkey wards 16hp beast, a '71 case 220, and a '74 gilson the tank, and working on a bolens ht 20 diesel repower) ....i dont mow with any of them...i know, im dumb....

thank you
Unless it's 150 or less I woulddnt, especially for anything over 1/2 an acre cuz it's a belt drive with a vertical shaft Briggs and for your needs a better choice is a regular old IHCC garden tractor, if you want to stay with the Cubs. Also it's montgomery ward not monkey ward

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
