My father was pulling the leaf vacuum with my 2072 and the coupler that attaches to the splined shaft on the front of the hydrostatic transmission broke loose.
I had replaced the coupler with an original cub cadet part back in the spring. I noticed the splined shaft was worn, but thought it would handle a fresh coupler with no problem. Apparently, the worn splines have destroyed the new coupler as well. I just checked partstree and a new shaft is over $650! Do you guys have any tips for fixing the existing shaft or perhaps know which other models of cub cadets might have pumps with a replacement shaft that will fit so I can start looking for used ones? I'm pretty disappointed. I spent $140 on the coupler now I'm faced with replacing that as well as a potentially expensive shaft. It happened right in the middle of gathering a huge amount of leaves. Thanks for any advice, Chris |

Post a pic of the shaft. Depending on the condition of the remaining splines you may be able to convert it to the CV style. I have adapters made up for the pump that are longer than stock so they grab all of the shaft.

Sorry it has taken me so long, I have about a hundred projects going simultaneously. I put it away for the winter and now it's time to tackle the problems with my old Cub again. I just removed the drive shaft and the spines don't appear to be as worn as I had originally thought. Is this a good candidate for a CV conversion? If so what would I need to do this conversion?
![]() ![]() In this pic, the left one was the original that gave out. There is about 1/16" of splines left inside. The center one was ordered from a used cub parts dealer. As you can see, the splines are still there, but are badly worn. Even though it worked, I was not happy with the slop/backlash in the adapter, so I bought the one on the right brand new at the local Cub Cadet dealer. It has zero splines after less than 50 hours of use. ![]() |

Find a good complete drive shaft from an 1882 and like I said I have an adapter in stock. You'll still need to drill and tap the pump shaft. Pic show how I did one in an 1872

Thanks, Sam. I'll post when I find an 1882 shaft. I think I know someone that would have one. How much for the coupler/adapter?

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
