Kohler CH18 Oil Leak in 1864
I picked up a very neglected 1864 last fall for next to nothing. My intent was to fix it up very minimally and sell it. Once I got it running and gave it a test drive, I was hooked. while they are awesome machines, my old girls (149 & 169) are nothing like this tractor. The v-twin and power steering spoiled me so I thought, I'll keep her and make a worker out of her. She came with a Cub 3 pt. hitch and 54' GT deck, perfect for plowing the garden and also mowing.
I have went though her and replaced fuel lines, all fluids and filters, rebuilt carb, etc. I have never had a Kohler twin before but I thought it didn't sound right, after some investigation, I found a blown head gasket and mouse nest in the shroud. This prompted me to pull the heads, lap the valves, replace all gaskets, breather reed etc.. I thought I would be good as everything looked fine during the teardown. She fired right up and ran beautifully and much quieter, however, there was a huge oil leak that was not there before. It comes from what looks like the top of the engine near the breather cover. I have circled the area where I see the leak in the picture. So, here we go again, I'm going to take it back apart, replace the front cover seal (behind the PTO) and the governor cross-shaft seal. Is there anything else I should be looking for or replacing while I have it torn down this far? I'm hoping that someone else has had this experience before and can share some of their knowledge with me so I can get it right the second time around! Bugjunkie
