Default ?? on a 2072

I finally got a 2072. Brought it home and gave it a good bath to start with. Found that the oil filter lines leak, starter needed removed and cleaned, front axle needs snugged up and new wheel bearings, plus the usual filter and fluid change. The foam piece that goes between the engine and the firewall is gone. Parts tree no longer carries this piece, can you get something at a hardware store to work or is it really necessary?

Thanks, Dave

Use a piece of hose or foam insulation; i.e.: thin pipe insulation.

Slice down the middle and put it on the steel.

That's not the right thing...... Your thinking of the piece that seals the tank support to the side panels and hood.

Yes, you can use foam from a hardware store. I'd suggest the square stuff with a sticky back like for sealing window AC units. Denser the foam the better. Yes, you need it. It keeps the fan pulling cooler air from the rear and not recirculating hot air from the engine bay.

Thanks J-Mech, also on parts tree they show 2 pieces, the upper and the lower foam pieces. Where does the lower piece go to/ get attached to?

It seals between the flywheel housing and the engine plate. Originally, it was "stuck" to the flywheel housing.

J-Mech is spot on, but I'd like to add that you want to use closed cell foam, open cell will trap moisture and promote bad stuff.

Thanks guys! Guess I will go to the hardware store and try to get some closed cell and also try to locate 2 new rubber grommets for the oil lines while I am there. Once I get her back together, I will try to get pictures on here.

What a bummer !! I ordered some of those strips just last summer , should have gotten more !!

Looks like the 1862 , 63 , 64 , uses the same thing but it is on the bottom , but it also says NLA after i searched the parts no.

Please LMK if you find a good replacement .

Thanks !!!!

Did some more lookin' and the 1861 and 1862 use that foam strip , but the 1863 uses a solid round foam piece , 723-3062.

Not sure if it would work , and partstree has it priced at $14.40. Maybe an alternative if nothing else can be found.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
