I just recently helped someone revive a 1650 that had been sitting for some time. After carb repair, hydraulic hose replacement and some cleaning, it is back up and running strong. My question is, someone along the way replaced the original 44A deck with a 44C off of a x82 series ? This will cut, but...The belt is severerly pulled due to the mule drive pulleys being either too large or too far forward. Also, it appears that the deck drive pulley is too large. I had heard from others that replacing the original 44a deck with a 44c was a common replacement, can anyone help me with the steps I need to take. I know the belt is not going to last long in the present configuration.
Thanks, Rjmorrow |

Well, you'll need to change that center pulley on the deck, change the two pulleys on the mule drive, and get a new belt. Not gonna be too cheap. You may be able to find used parts from our sponsors or place a wanted ad.

I guess i was hoping for some specifics. Does anyone know part numbers or what mule drive setup to get parts from? Do i need the mule off of an 82 series and does it direct fit the 1650? Does someone know the drive spindle diameter?
Thanks, RJMorrow |

From what I have read, the C and A decks are almost identical except for the C had a 5/8 pulley vs. 3/8 on the A.
So, if you have the original QL mule drive and PTO pulleys, then you need to change out the pulley on the deck to a 3/8 one. You could change out the mule drive and PTO, but that would be more costly. It sounds like you might have the wrong length belt there too.... the 44 and 50 had either a 3/8x78 (4.5" dia pulley) or a 3/8x79 (5" dia pulley). Again, I may be way off here, but I have done some of this research for my own benefit, and this is what I have come to learn. Sorry I have no part numbers for pulleys or other parts, the belts are listed elsewhere on this site. |

You say the tractor originally had a 44A deck on it and now has a 44C. With that in mind, the only modification to the 44C deck would be to change the center Drive Pulley. It would be the same pulley as used on a 44A deck. (part no: IH-126393-C1)
This is assuming, that the original Mule Drive (from the 44A) is being used also. You can find parts listings for Cub Cadet Equipment by clicking on this link.....Parts Lookup and type in the model number in lookup box.

I do suspect the mule drive is changed out to the one from the 44c deck as well. I will examine closer and report back. I am still learning about these units. Thanks for the link.

If you have a Mule Drive from an 82 Series Cub, then the additional pulley change of the these pulleys would need to be done also.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
