Why don't you start all over, tell us what the actual problem is and what actually happened. Then tell us what you have done to it since. This middle of the story, then the beginning .... that doesn't help you, or us.

It was running fine. I was letting it idle and the RPM'S ran way up and then it shut off. Since then, I can get it to start for a couple seconds but it won't stay running. I can get it to run a little longer if I hold the starter button, but as soon as I let go it shuts right off, like dead stop. I replaced the generator and the key switch and the wiring

I also have to keep the battery charger on it to get to to start battery is brand new. Seems like something is making it turn over real hard.

Sounds to me like you have a couple things going on. 1. If the RPM's shot way up it sounds like you have a problem with the governor. Might need to be reset. 2. Or possibly a bad coil. And no they cannot jump time like a car. If you think it's losing power to the coil put a volt meter on the 12v side of the coil and start it up.

Just went out and ran a wire from the battery straight to the coil still the same problem. I also tried to hit it with starter fluid to keep it running that didn't help

There's not a lot left then. The problem is somewhere between the coil and plug. Spark plug, plug wire, points.

Ok.... you have two threads going for the same problem.
http://www.onlycubcadets.net/forum/s...ad.php?t=39009 Lets pick one thread or the other for the issue please. It is not the S/G or the regulator or the starter button. It's an engine problem so lets use the other thread. Thank you!

Just a quick thought, and hoping not to muddy up the water.
But, what about the condenser? Sounds like there's been a lot going on with wrenches on this "O". Without a working condenser, the engine will fire, but shut off very quickly. They seldom go bad, but perhaps it isn't connected? Maybe the wire is split? Not sure if that would make it rev up, but it sure would make it die down. Take it slow, and as some said, check out the manual and don't just throw parts at it. Solve it systematically. Takes time, but you'll get it, and you'll gain a little more info about your tractor. Good luck!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
