I am curious,when you tapped out the pins /studs that the balance gears turn on, did you tap them from the outside pushing them INTO the inside of the engine?
I hate the process of removing the balance gears.I have always had to bust the top one. Your way seems easier. I will try it next time. I will tap for a 1/2" pipe plug as J-Mech suggested.

Oh,by the way,,,,how are you going to bolt that tunnel cover back on? It looks like you cut the flange off of the bottom of the cover.

Yes I taped them in.
As for the tunnel cover, i plan on welding 1/8" angle to it so it will be a little more sturdy. after looking at it I thought it was going to be a little weak if I left the way it was. I also plan on welding fo flat steel around the joining edges. I think it should work well. I just need to figure a way to make it look good joining them up. |

A narrow frame hydrostatic tractor is THE hardest to work on. That removable cover will really make things easier!

I removed the balance gears from my 16 hp from the 169, with just the oil pan removed. Pulled the clips, and by carefully working the crank back and forth, and the gears, it finally wiggled through. Takes patience and finesse. But, it can be done without breaking anything, or driving out the pins.
