you probably should read up on Onans in the engine section. Here is a link posted there to a good read:
http://www.mytractorforum.com/280-sm...an-engine.html

Hopefully the damage is just a rod.

You said you are a newby so I just going to give you some advice. Repower the tractor and you will be money ahead and have a great tractor for years to come. Rebuilds can get expensive and they do not always turn out good. Just my .02.

Understood.. honestly I want to see if I can do it.. if it's more then just a rod I will probably do a repower with a Kohler Command. I just hope I can find something with as much torque thats not crazy expensive. A little quieter would be nice too.

If you go the repower route, there are folks that would buy whats left of the Onan, don't send it to the scrap yard.

Understood.. I know they are rare.. it's another reason I want to fix it! So along those lines!...

What's the best way to clean the heads?.. they are filthy, probably why it had a breakdown.. probably an overheat issue.

So I finally got the process started today. I got the 982 into my garage on its own power. I disconnected the battery greased the terminals and taped up the cables. I was able to remove most of the shroud. Except the piece the is on the left side. Seems like there is a bolt under the oil filter somewhere I can't find a way to get to. The exhaust came off next, that wasn't too bad. However it was really rusty stuff. I put the bolts in a vinegar bath to see it I can clean them up some. I can see 2 of the 4 bolts that hold oil pan down.

It's there a easy way to referb the mufflers? I'd like to refill them with steel wool or fiberglass.

I also found that the carb was not bolted down to the intake manifold! That can't be normal... Can it? .

I'm putting all the parts in plastic baggies as I go. Looks like PB Blaster is going to be my friend! I better go buy some stock!

I'll upload pictures shortly. I also found a guy selling an Onan P224 cheap! Would it be difficult to set that up to run in the 982? He says it has low compression and needs new rings. I'm wondering if it would be worth it?

You pulling the air shroud with the engine in the tractor? I don't think it was that big of an ordeal to pull the engine from mine. Had to remove a rat nest from mine. Take a good look at the driveshaft and its components while the engine is out. Won't be surprised if all your wear items are shot. I even had to replace the shaft on mine. Before you pour a ton of money in the engine price out what it would take to rebuild the driveshaft--anywhere from a few bucks to around $150.

I didn't bother the mufflers on mine, seemed fine to me. If memory serves me correct you'll notice one of them bolts on kind of crooked. Its behind the grill, your neighbors with green machines won't notice. Seems they have an odd open end slot arrangement for bolting down with.

Oh yeah, snug up your steering box with the motor out, a lot easier this way. Don't get it too tight or it will be a bear to turn once you put the engine back in (don't ask how I know).

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
