Check the armature bushing in the end plate and make sure it's not worn. It if is, it will quickly shell the teeth on the new starter gear. It'll even get the ring gear on the flywheel.

Yes it is fine,I just put another starter I had on the shelf ready to go,all cleaned up and ready to install.

Thanks guys,
Runs great now,adjustment of the valves was necessary,shuts off now,put on the parts shined it up. Now to put the deck on and see what happens....
