Is there any easy way to straighten a shaft on an engine starter? Has anyone tried to do it? I don't want to break/damage the shaft, windings, or commutator, anyone have any ideas?

I'm sure in the bending process that the commutator bars and windings will be damaged, so yes, replace the whole starter.

Sad to say but replacement is the way to go... you could try putting the bent tip in a bench vice and pulling on it but chances are it will never be perfectly straight again and a good chance of windings getting broken.... ebay has had some good prices on techumseh starters...

Getting divorced cost a lot more than I wanted to put into it too, but I couldn't just let her set there in the way forever.

Depends on where it is bent.
If it is like a delco old skool starter, you can chuck it in a lathe on the laminated part and indicate it, then use the cross slide to put pressure on the high side of the shaft and re indicate till it is true. I'm thinking the armature is rubbing the field shoes? Or you can chuck the bent part of the shaft and push on the laminations. Usually they bend the shaft where it enters the laminations. take your time and think it out. You have nothing to loose as it unusable as is. If you have a collet chuck, use it and put the shaft in the appropriate size collet, as you will not dent the shaft with the 3 jaws of chuck as the shaft is soft. it is do-able, if you have some equipment. if all else fails, possibly you can find a good used one on evil bay. |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
