I just got my starter generator for my 100 back today from being rebuilt, it had a bad field coil. I installed it and ran the tractor, it is charging now but when I checked my voltage I have 16 volts at the F terminal on the SG which is good but I have 15.5 at the battery now, I know it was low on charge but is the charging voltage too high? The shop that rebuilt it said it should be around 14 volts when charging. I just don't want to ruin the SG, the tractor does not have a amp gauge so I don't know if the amperage is too high. Thanks

Yes that is too high. There is a procedure in the manual on how to adjust the v/r. Charging voltage should be around 14 volts

youll have to open the volt reg box and adjust the points in side it , I don't remember how I did my 86 but theres a procedure some where online , should be able to find it if you look

Thanks, I found the information on adjustment I will give it a try after work, I am thinking about adding a amp gauge somewhere under the hood so I can see what it's drawing.

Check your voltage @ the battery terminals, the reg should be cutting charge back to about 14.5V max @ full throttle, maybe a little less when
batt is fully charged. After a battery is rested for 24 hours( no charge/or discharge) it should be about 12.6V if fully charged, sometimes a little less for an older battery. ------If hot weather, battery voltage will read a bit higher. |

I follow the tutorial and dialed the voltage in at 13.5 volts, all is good now.I wonder how long it had been running with the higher voltage?

Might have been what toasted the field coil. 16 plus volts would make that thing hot and working too hard all the time. Good job figuring it out and adjusting it to where it needs to be

good job on the fix and thanks for the in sight on the correct voltage charge, I just installed a whole new wiring loom and VR. Things did not go to plans at first because I wired up the VR wrong but the only damage done was a burnt amp to battery wire (My goof up) but all is good now and it starts well and reads 14.5 volts roughly at peak RPM. One thing I did notice tho was the RPM drop with the engine and no charging compared to having it charging. I heard that charging steals about 1 to 2 % HP that's why pulling tractors run a no charge set up.

Once the battery is fully charged it takes very little to maintain it, just basically what you are using for ign and clutch coil if equipped or other unmentioned accessories.
Sadly there is no perpetual motion, unless you are talking taxes and gubber-mint regulations

The generator won't pull hard in on/off cycles enough to change the RPM of the engine..... if it does, something is wrong.
Yes generators take power, but not 1-2 hp. Not this set up anyway. It's around .2 -.3 hp on this set up. Pullers need every ounce of HP they can get. |
