I'm going to need to do some work on my mag 18 and have a few questions since I've never had a twin before. The head gaskets are both leaking so I'm going to replace them but I need to know if I can true the heads with sand paper on glass without having a valve clearance issue? Since the heads will be trued by hand do I need to worry about one cylinder having more compression than the other? Since I can't get to the head bolts with the tins on I will need to run it with them off so I can retorque after it cools, should I put it through 4 or 5 heat cycles and check torque after each to make sure I won't have an issue once the tins are on? I know some of these might be stupid questions but I wanna get it right the first time so I can enjoy my first twin instead of wishing I'd never bought it. Thanks

No problem with valve clearance, you can usually mill .040 off them and still have no problem.
You will only be taking off maybe .0005, if that. On the gaskets: after you torque them, run it till it is up to operating temp. You can put the tins on with just a couple of screws, and run it @ full throttle with no load till it is hot,- guessing 5-10 min. Then let it cool, re torque and you should be ok. I only heat cycle it once, you can try 2x and see if they loosen any more, I doubt it. Do use the gaskets with the "fire ring" I have had success with ebay gaskets ( prolly Stens) if they have the crimped-over inner edge ( fire ring) |

I agree with all the info that George gave above.. I have never had an issue with the bolts loosening up. For sure use the gaskets with the fire ring.. Some people don't like the old opposed twins but I have had really good luck with several of them.. Properly tuned and maintained they have a lot of torque and make smooth power. I have a Magnum 18 in a Gravely with 1500 hrs on it.. other than oil changes and one valve adjustment it's never been touched. I think you will like it! ![]() ![]()

All good advice although I wouldn't run it at WOT without a load on the engine. I'd do half to 3/4 throttle or just drive it around for a bit. All you're trying to do is heat the engine up, nothing fancy about that
