Default The 982

It's been a long time since I have been on the site. Probably 3 yrs. I'm back because there is a problem with one of my 982's . After 22 yrs, the Onan is starting to [what sounds like knock] under load. Maybe it's carbon on the heads, but I doubt it. So here is the question - to rebuild or replace the Onan with a Vanguard or such. Opinions please. Thank You.

Welcome back!
Onans are nice when they are running good but expensive to work on! You could go with a Vanguard, Kohler Magnum or Kohler command.

Keep your eye out for a 2185 for an organ donor. It has the Kohler CH18 in it.

How many hours on the Onan? Has it ever been rebuilt or torn down for any reason in the past? When my Onan lost half of it's compression, I dropped it off at my local machine shop. They tore it down and checked all tolerances. I'm going to need new rings and exhaust valves. When all the work is done I expect it will be less than half the cost of a Chinese re-power.

Just checked SEW and they do not offer a kit for the 982. A used engine would be a big unknown. Parts for Onans are not hard to find or all that expensive. Robert Kummer is a great source for parts and knowledge. Here is his contact info. http://boomersonanparts.com/

Oh,,by the way,,I found the problem. The bolts had backed off of the fwd crankshaft bearing fitting. Tightened down,,all well. Spent all day Sunday just repairing items that had been neglected. The 982 has been re-purposed ,,to the duties of yard mule. Moving all of the boats,,lifting outboards on and off. And mowing once in awhile when the newer 982 is down for maintenance.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
