Our New Cub 123

Hey All,
Got a new Cub 123 this spring.



Bought it sight un-seen off craigslist, it looked clean so decided to take a chance on it. It also came with this stuff....



So I figured that would keep me busy for a while. Mainly got the little cub for a mower for the 3 acres. Bro was nice enough to do the road trip for me and bring it all back to the shop where we checked it out and got it running! Whew, you never know with things...... Mowed a few times with it but it always took forever to crank the thing up when it was cold. The thumb test said we had compression, but....it seemed a little lacking. Bro said "They all start like that." Well, my stuff doesn't..... My research on your forum said a carboned head / piston could cause that so I would check that out on my next trip home. I got back home in September and was going to do the last mow, but the little cub had other ideas, it was done. Pulled the plug and what compression I had was gone, time to get it to the shop.
Loaded it up and got the ramrod to give me a hand on teardown....



Yep, cracked head and burned exhaust valve Well, that answered that question ! Online shopped for new valves and an used head with head gasket, under $100 Lapped the valves in, set clearances, torqued her down, and buttoned it all back up. Gave the carb a clean and fixed the weeping petcock while I was at it Choke, half throttle, hit the key.... fired up on about the third revolution, now that's what I'm talkin about! Some minor adj on the Walboro and put the blower on.



Big, thick, wet, heavy, slop..... we made headway but it was a treat. Running rich so kept leaning out the Walboro. Then Bro said, "Hey, I've got a tool box in the garage somewhere. I think its got chains in it " Yep, the rusty old box had chains from one of his trades and after some adjustment, they fit like a glove. Ran back out to the snow and sliced it up like bread

Had an issue with no charging during snow blowing so cleaned the V Reg contacts, jump F to ground to check Start / Gen, and Presto! 14.5 v at idle. Man, what a machine.

Good job on the 123. Always good to get the kids involved too, teaches them things most little kids don't know or will never know. Nice looking shop too, there's some other metal/fab/machinist guys on here too. Your blade looks rugged and homemade. Looks like it's had a repaint too, nice hood.

Next order of business (after the 4L60E rebuild / install ) is to go after an oil leak somewhere in the trans........
