When you check the end gap of the rings be sure their not cockeyed in the bore. You do have a ring compressor don't you? Careful not to score up the cylinder walls with the rod, or smack the crank with it and score it up. Don't wanna discourage you or anything, but if you think your in over your head have someone do this that has rebuilt engines before. It's very disappointing to spend all this money and time to have it messed up.

That's a good idea. I don't want to discourage you and I'm not putting you down. I think it gives you more piece of mind that way.

I got the block back today! Talked with the machine shop owner, he seemed interested in me rebuilding it, he said he measured the piston ring end gap and it's in the proper range according to the Kohler manual. I asked if he could rebuild it for me, he told me he could but it seems like a simple rebuild and I should be able to do it myself. He was genuinely interested in helping me rebuild it and asked what I would need help with, and that if I get to a point in the rebuild where I'm not sure what to do I could just bring it in. He was very encouraging and now I'm leaning towards doing it myself again. I still have to order some parts so I'm gonna sit on it till then. Here are some pics of the block, I think it came out great.

Did he grind the seats? Did you get him the new valves?

Yes and yes, also checked valve guides. The complete job included sonic clean/soda blast block, valve job, over bore/hone, adjusted piston end ring gap, checked crankshaft.

If you have an engine machinist willing to show you how to put it together, by all means take him up on his offer!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
