I've always been too lazy to pull the starter. I remove a few tin screws, get an opening, blow it out with a long skinny blow gun, shoot some WD-40 on the shaft, blow again, try the starter a few times, one last squirt, close it up. It is usually good for a couple years. If you have the starter out, do what George said.

I didn't use the Bendix lube that ol' George mentioned. I found a 3-in-1 dry spray lube at TSC and used it. Spray on and dries; leaves no residue or attracts dirt. Giving it a try. If it doesn't work over the season, I'll order some of the other lube.
Used the 782 last weekend (about a week after the repair). Started right up...
