Default Governor Cross Shaft

Hello everyone, this is my first post and I am not a Kohler or small engine guy.

My late 70's engine is in a bad place and I hope to save it with your help. The bolt that holds the governor cross shaft in came loose. I noticed the problem and tightened it up. I must have messed something up because now the engine starts but has what seems like timing problems when I give it fuel.

Do you think I need to pull the whole thing apart? Or, is the some way to put the shaft back in the correct way without opening the case?

Thanks, Paul

First of all. Welcome to Only Cub Cadets. I do not have any knowledge on the engine you are working on, but someone with the knowledge will be along shortly. Again, Welcome.

I'm sorry but I missed where you told us what you are working on.
Is it a cub cadet? what model? what size engine?.
It might help as we don't like to assume anything, as too many variables.

The engine is a 16 HP, Kohler.
The cub cadet is a 1650 model.

Thanks for the assistance,
Paul

The governor cross shafts is held in with a nut. The governor arm is held on with a bolt.

Now, what is it that came loose?

You may need to readjust the governor. The Kohler K series engine manual tells how to do this. You can find it in our "Resources" section on the home page. It can be found under the heading "Technical Library, Tractors".

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
