Hi, new member and new to garden tractors as well.
I am upgrading from a older weedeater brand riding mower to a '99 HDS3225 with 54" deck, still getting used to having power steering. It runs and everything seems to work ok, will need adjustments. I know it needs new bearings on the deck and a good cleaning. Probably could use a tune up. I plan on using it to plow/till a garden next spring and to mow the lawn I suppose. This year I used the weedeater to plow and decided it probably wouldn't last too long with that much load behind it. I bought the Cub Cadet for $400 and it reads as having ~350 hours on it. |

That will kill a lot of grass for the money. You couldn't even buy a good push mower for that money
Experts will be along shortly but I think there is something about the differential lock on the rear end

If I'm reading the right posts, there is a known issue with the Differential locker bolts backing out and breaking gears/case etc. Looks like the four bolts should be replaced with grade 8 bolts and kept in place with some red loctite?
I checked the plugs (all good), cleaned the carb, fixed the choke return spring (had come loose at some point) changed oil, cleaned air filter (replacement on order) now it runs a lot smoother than when I picked it up. I guess the hydraulics are next, and the deck. I'm assuming all the maintenance tasks are past due as I have no maintenance history on it. |

Welcome to OCC and hello from a fellow Tennessean! Nice looking 3000 series! If that is the one listed on the Nashville c-list a few weeks ago it sounds lime you talked him down some. Either way you did not get hurt.

Well... I know not to use Chinese bearings for the blade rotors again. The old bearings were completely worn out and rusty from PO. I replaced them with cheap chinese bearings and had one fail the second time I went to mow my 1 Acre yard. I had them greased up properly, the deck was pretty quiet and cut great. The second time I went to mow the PTO belts burned rubber and my engine cut out. thinking something got stuck in a blade I went to check the rotors, two spun normally, the third was frozen solid. I checked and saw nothing in the blade, so I pulled it apart. Attaching image... The rust is from leaving it out overnight in the rain after pulling it apart. the other bearing still had some grease on it so I assume it burned off the grease I had packed in it.
After driving around a bit, the GT seeps some drive fluid from the differential at the back gasket. I have a gasket on order and will take the opportunity to make sure the locking differential is tight. The ignition switch started acting up and is getting replaced as well. Paint comes next. Other than that I love it! |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
