Default 2146 questions for possible purchase

I've recently posted Q's re: the used 1210 we recently bought from a gentleman (and he really is) who buys used tractors, fixes them up & sells them. While he is working on our 1210 problem he lent us a 2146 which my wife (who does our mowing) has been using. She likes the 2146 better (38" deck which saves her from hand mowing) and she feels safer on the hills. I am considering buying the 2146 and have some Qs's:
1. the serial # & mfg date plate is missing, so don't know the age, but the hour meter is at 760. This model was first made in 2000. Anyone know for how many years?
2. the Linamar engine S/N is (top) Onan 191-2107 (below that) 218000-3270. From what little I've found so far apparently parts are very expensive. How reliable are the Linamar engines?
3. my main concern is the rust on the right seam inboard where the nonskid footpad is. The rust has broken the metal and there is approx. 12" opening along the weld. How serious is that?
4. Considering the above, would this tractor be worth buying, and if so, at what price?
Thank you in advance!

The 1210 is a much better machine. Yes you may need to give it a little TLC considering that it is older but it's a true Garden Tractor as opposed to a light duty lawn mower.

You'd argue with a wife who'll mow the lawn? Buy her what she likes to drive.

Sam, Thank you for the clarification.

Jack, trust me, not arguing with her! And she loved your comment *L* Just that she's only used the 1210 a couple of times, and the contrast between that & the 2146 was quickly apparent to her (as Sam mentioned). The 2146 feels more like the JD160 she drove for 25 years. She admits she has to get acclimated to the 1210. By the end of the summer if she doesn't like it, I'll get her something else. A happy wife....*G*

Lotss of cool stuff you can do to a 1210. I had a 1210 that I repowered with a 16HP Vanguard, I put a Super Steer axle in it from a 1440, a CV drive shaft and a 3 turn steering box that I modified from a 1440. I screwed up and sold it.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
