Sherwin Williams Acrylic Enamel Cub 125 Colors

When I did my Original I went through a little over three quarts. Granted I had to repaint a few pieces, but I was surprised it took that much paint. I went the first time and bought two quarts, and thought that was plenty. Thought wrong.

I already have Sherwin Williams Acrylyd R7K212 Medium Reducer (1 gal.), Autobody Master #5875 Medium Reducer (1 gal.), and Dynatron Wet Look Hardener (1 pint). Will these reducers and hardener work with the Irongard enamel?

I use shopline jh6002 hardener and ppg DT reducer in whatever temp range is appropriate at the time I'm spraying. I have no experience with the products you mention, the reducer should be fine and the hardener should be fine if it's for enamel.

I have run into a little problem finding the Irongard paint. After checking around with the various Case/IH dealers close by where I live I found that the only colors they carry in stock are red and black. The dealers close to me will order it for me but they will not order anything less than 2 gals. The closes dealer where I can buy just one gallon is about a 150 miles round trip, which in South Texas is not considered a long drive, however, for this Texan it is a long drive. So I may be back to using the Sherwin Williams automotive paint or they have an "industrial" enamel that I can get in the same colors as the automotive acrylic enamel. So my quest for paint is still in process.

Side story and you Cub guys will love this. In checking for the Irongard paint, I was talking with the parts manager at the Case/IH industrial equipment dealer. In the course of the conversation he ask me what tractor I was painting and I told him an old IH Cub. He ask me specifically which model I was painting, which surprised me since most people don't know much about old IH Cubs. He then explained he had worked for IH Farm Equipment for a number of years and was very familiar with IH Cub Cadets. Now the good part. He went on to tell me his father in law's old Cub was still sitting in the barn where he left it before he died over 30 years ago. He wasn't sure which model it was but he guessed it was some where around the age of my 125. He said the Cub had a mower deck, tiller, and a blade, all in good shape. We had a discussion about the family getting rid of that old obsolete garden tractor but I'm not going to get into that.

You can order paint from messicks, not sure what they charge for shipping but it will probably be cheaper than driving for it.

No plans, darn it. The fellow said his wife has three sisters and a brother and they can't agree on selling any of their dads stuff. However, I plan to go by and personally meet the parts manager to see if I can't get an invitation to at least look at the Cub and the implements.

Ted, if the Iron Guard is going to be a trip to get, why not check out an auto parts store that carries PPG brand paints and go with their Omni brand paint? It's comparable in price (at least here) and sprays as easy as the IH stuff. That's what I had to have mixed for the white on my Original, and it painted fine.

Todd, Thanks for the info on the Omni PPG paint. I will check that out today.

Received the following in an e-mail from Rust-Oleum: "We do not recommend using any type of hardener with our oil-based primers but you may reduce with acetone or mineral spirits up to 15% by volume".
