That was my 1st thought, problem is the shaft has a 4" tube so I'd have to fab something. I was thinking about some 6-8" plastic pipe.

Personally, I would raise a bunch of noise with Deere, and I mean LOUD. Round balers didn't come on the scene last week. There is no excuse for this happening. There is no way you can control the size of a windrow unless you are running 2 or 3 together. Sometimes there is just that much hay out there. Taking a partial width with the rake results in the tractor and/or baler running over and packing down the other windrows. If Deere isn't willing to help, I would consider getting a 2 wheel drive tractor. He can buy bigger, rock solid 2wd tractors for way less money than he has in that machine. Obviously the suggestions to create some sort of shield are probably the only thing that can be done with this machine, my point is it shouldn't come down to that, Deere needs to step up and at least cover the repairs.

This is the only broken JD I've ever dealt with. This was 100% operator error(not me)! This is what happens when you don't pull the drawbar out far enough on a haybine with a fixed length shaft and try to take a turn. I had to repair the quill with Belzona and buy a used shaft. Other people's kids!

Don't know if this could be done up front, but we used to wire up a piece of millfelt under the 856 while round bailing to stop the wrapping... Don't know if it's called the same all over the country, but "millfelt" was old belts we would get from paper mills.
It was plenty heavy duty, and we had it so it hung under the rear of the tractor, and tongue of the baler.

I have heard of owners of similar tractors removing the front driveshaft while baling hay,,,

If it is so wet that you need 4WD, you should be doing something else!!!

He bought this machine a couple years ago used and trust me it's well used. Not a chance that Deere would do anything for him.

Some of the hills that he bails need 4WD. Ground is not wet. Removing the shaft on this thing would be a PITA anyway.

Glad it's not my tractor.

your plastic pipe "sleeve" sounds like a doable try.

Maybe the light, flex plastic sewer drain field stuff.
Slit it length wise like that wire loom stuff.
Light enough that it won't damage anything if it snags.
Maybe

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
