Default Super Garden Tractor Question

Looking for the next rehab project (SGT), I stumbled upon another forum’s “list” mentioning other Supers such as JD 400/420/430, and Case/Ingersoll 400 Series. Are they really considered super garden tractors? I was under the assumption (per Wikipedia/Oscar Will III) that only IH/CCC built Super Garden Tractors (higher center of gravity, stretch frame and bigger HP). Are the JD and Case SGT’s?

The JD 400 series are definitely in the "super garden tractor" category as far as size, power, attachments etc.

Once you see a 430 in person you will have no doubts that it's a super.
400 implements are specific to that series also and they are really proud of them
cost wise. Like anything green I guess

Looks like their added length was more in the nose? Maybe to squeeze the Yanmar in? I have the chance to get their little brother 318. Only considering it for front hydraulics and Onan......or maybe not

My neighbor has a JD 420, and a JD 430 with the Perkins 3 cylinder diesel. These are without doubt "super" garden tractors! Nice folks, and we get along great being I'm a die hard IH Cub Cadet loyalist!

I think (but am not certain) that "Super Garden Tractor" was a term coined by CCC in the 80's. Next time I'm at dad's house I will look to verify, but mid late 80's all the parts books were in blue binders--there was one labeled such.

I don't want to admit it but those 4xx series Deeres are as tough as anything to wear yellow paint. If you are talking about the Case models built by Colt they seem to be a beast as well. Doesn't Zippy have one? I've also seen a Snapper (think it was built by someone else) that was extremely heavy built. And lets not forget Power King---I think some of their later stuff actually resembled a heavy built lawnmower and not a miniature tractor.

Jon, I "thought" he'd said the engine was a Perkins in his 430. I'll have to ask again when I see him.

Seems like the Farmall Cubs, and Lo Boys could be "super" garden tractors too,...just an opinion

John, true on those JD's, based on my friend's JD's. We're all garden and tractor enthusiasts in my neighborhood. Still, my personal observation is that the IH Cub Cadets still get the respect they deserve from my JD friends. Asked Art about his JD 318. He said is was made around '86 or so. Having drove my 1450 to his place, I told him my 1450 was a '75, and shared the Farmall Cub transmissions in the 1450 garden tractor.

So, guess it goes with out saying!

There are some Bolens "super" gts around here too! Gives us something to do, lol!

I bleed yellow but hands down a 430 Deere will give the best Cub ever built, a 1772 a run for its money.....and probably win. They are in a different class + I think they nailed it by stretching the hood and not making you lean over and reach for the steering wheel.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
