It really pisses me off when people do stupid crap like that.

He's going to try to put a 12 hp Narrow Frame engine in a Wide Frame tractor and if he doesn't have all the correct parts to make it fit like it should, he'll end up with a cobbled together POS tractor that he can't get $100.00 out of and another pile of parts.

In essence, he's going to ruin what could be 2 perfectly good tractors.

All because he's stupid, doesn't know how to get a Cub Cadet running and thinks he's setting on a goldmine. What a Moron!

I would walk away no matter what deal he offers but that's just me.

I was looking at a corn planter once and the seller started acting weird. Wanted to know when I could come look at it, discussed a day. Then he lets me know he decided to paint it, couldn't come look at it Who the heck wants to sell something then decide to paint it and cancels a visit from a prospective buyer? He never would reschedule with me. My guess is he sold it locally or decided to keep it. As for the Cadet, sounds sketchy to me, I'd probably just walk away and save myself grief.

Same here. Have dealt a fair bit on craigslist - you never know what you are going to get in terms of behavior. Sometimes its a simple/easy transaction. Sometimes it is not, and just becomes a big time suck. This sounds like the latter, and not worth even trying to make a deal.

A wise adviser once told me; 'you cant make a good deal with a snake". This was more because you are in business together afterwards, but its kinda true for one-off transactions as well.

In this case you will never know what you are buying until long after the deal is done. A simple take it or leave it offer, sure. But dont be shy about walking away and never giving it another thought.

A 149 in average shape should go for about $400 - $500 in my area. Pristine restoration $800, but only to the right buyer and will take a while. A good deal is about $300 to $350 (but you may have to wait for that).

$.02

Ignore the fool and when he contacts you again, and he will, tell him you only buy it Right NOW for $200 since he's screwed you around so much. Be prepared with $200 in cash at home and ready to go. If he balks tell him forget it. There are lots of Cubs out there. If there are none in your area, Fastenal is a great way to get one shipped in. Hang in there. I've played this game too and it's frustrating!

Ditto. Not like it's the only 149 in the world.

This really sounds like another case of "If it stinks in the beginning, it's gonna stink all the way through".

If he does come down to the price you really want to pay, you will have to ask yourself what he found out about it that made him come down to your price.

I would have walked away already.

At this point I'm done with this guy, if he contacts me again I'll tell him something along the lines of what cubs-n-bxrs posted. I usually go out of my way to make a deal happen whether I'm selling or buying something so generally I put up with people's bs for a little bit. Yosemite Sam, you're spot on, he's gonna ruin two tractors because he thinks he's got gold. This guy doesn't know what he has and what its worth, and expects top dollar for it. That's what truly bothers me most of all. I just wanted to share the experience I've had with this seller with you guys here. I appreciate your guys input.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
