You know the saying ignorance is bliss, well now that I have been "educated" (looked up the tool Sam suggested and that lead to YouTube, you get the idea) so much for needle files and a honing stone. Debating making one of those ring filers---looks like a Dremel cut off wheel should work--HAND CRANKED, of course. And here I was trying to come up with a slick way to grind the valve stems without having to send it back to the engine shop (actually got a plan for that).

Looking at other postings today (Zippy), I know 2 guys that would not vote for the 18XX machines as their favorite.

At least the 2072 and the 982 came effortlessly out of hibernation today so dad could mow chickweed and onions.

Well, got 3 options: buy, make, or borrow one of those tools.

Actually John, after the replacement engine, the 1872 is my favorite tractor

Forgot you had that one. I was referring to your current headache, I mean challenge, I mean "project". If you are like me what you refer to it as depends a lot on the latest issue you have found with it!

Finally, made progress! Valve stems ground (clearance), valves installed, heads on, valve covers on, intake installed. exhaust manifolds back on.

One small problem, I drove the flywheel side seal in too deep. By the service manual, .080" is the max depth to drive it in--I screwed up and got in close to .150". Looks like I have to order a seal, can't have any luck crossing it over. Anyone got an interchange # for 52-032-10 Kohler?

John,
I have a seal here and the # on it is 1177 and crosses over to this one.
Go here and see if it is the same size.

That one is too big, this one is around 1 3/4 OD. I'll get a magnifying glass or my son to see if they can make out the numbers on the old one. I can see the numbers, but can't attempt to read them.

My notes from a few years ago show SKF 13514 as a replacement for 52-032-10-S - front (flywheel side) crankshaft oil seal - KT-17/M-18.

Check the dimensions and see if they are correct.

Yes, that is it! I spent a ridiculous amount of time trying to cross over the Kohler number, the number on the seal, and even looking by sizes--that really puzzled me. The one you listed, however, is not a "rubber covered" seal. Don't know if it makes a difference or not--maybe there is a difference in the sealing material? . There must be something to this as to why you can't find an interchangeable seal #. I can guarantee one thing, the seal I installed too deep was in an aftermarket set--no name and a different # on it than the original. Anyway, I have one coming from a Cadet Collector that needed to thin his parts supply.
I'm afraid to look (so I won't) but the seal you listed is probably on the shelf at 1/2 the parts stores in town.

I'm not a fan of those rubber coated NOK seals that Kohler uses. Maybe there's a reason but I don't know what it could be.
I kept blowing the rear seal and found a SKF replacement and haven't had a problem since. I think that's when I found an interchange for the front seal but I haven't needed to replace that one yet.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
