Default Cub 1045LTX not starting

I replaced the battery Friday. It tried to start one time but instead of the regular sound it was a screech. Now it will not even try. There is no click, no lights on the dash, just silence.
The fall mowing was a bit smokey but I never could tell where it came from. And it did not smoke every time. I last mowed in December and used it in January again. The battery was ok then but I knew it was an older one.
Would appreciate any comments.

I bought it new in 2008 , I think or 2009. I mowed then about 1 1/2 acres but for the last 6 years I mow 2 1/2 acres every 5 - 10 days.

Normally smoking and screeching are not a good combination... How does the oil look?
have you pulled the plugs to see if you have compression? Will it even turn over?

Is this a Courage engine??

The oil looks clean about the same color as it came out of the jug. And yes it is a Courage. I have not taken it apart yet. Had other things to do. Lawn service came and mowed the lawn so that gives me a little more time.

Unfortunately the Courage engine has a short life expectancy. MTD built the Home Cheapo and TSC Cubs about as cheap as they could just to satisfy a Home Cheapo or TSC price point. People buy them because they think they are getting a real Old School Cub. You'll need to do some diagnostics to find what the problem is. Pull the spark plug and see if it will spin over first.

An LTX1045 really isn't meant to mow "acreage". It's just a lawn tractor.

Is the PTO bearing out? That would cause a screech and the brake on it would prevent the starter from turning the engine over. If it won't crank with the spark plug out, try removing the PTO.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
