Until you figure out what's wrong with the start function, it's a simple matter to jump the solenoid to start it. Short across the spade post where the blue wire connects to the large battery post and it'll crank over.

Here's a link to the added starter relay.

You know what, sometimes I get too focused on fixing a problem that I forget the workaround. I didn't even think of that at the time because it was getting dark when I was monkeying with trying to figure out what was wrong rather than just jumping the solenoid. That would have been a lot easier than dragging it like I did.

Speaking of that. My 1641 has a relief valve lever that supposedly you pull up and you can push or tow it. It will not move at all, it's like the brake is on. Relief valve not working? The 1864 has a spot for one on the tunnel plate but there is no lever. Missing or never there in the first place? How does one move these things if I'm all the way out in the back field and need a tow or push to the house for some reason?

1641 has a hydro gear pump and they use the pull up release. The 1864 has a Sundstrand pump and those have auto release valves.

Here is another thread with a Kohler that doesn't want to start. In it I posted how to jumper the starter. http://www.onlycubcadets.net/forum/s...ad.php?t=47966

Thanks. I hope to mess with it tonight if I have time. I have the day off tomorrow for kids haircuts, but other than that I should have time then too. Upon closer inspection when I got it into the garage last night, there is a small rust hole on the 42" deck that I didn't see before because it was caked with grass, and the engine is pretty wet under the valve cover areas. There is a disconnected hose on the side that goes to the oil filter area. It's just sticking there. It reaches the fuel pump, is this the vacuum line for the fuel pump? Seems like an odd place for a vacuum line if it is. This is my first Kohler, my Briggs vanguard vacuum comes off the valve cover. This engine has what look like two vacuum ports capped off on the valve cover. I was going to look through the manual for this one that you sent me Sam for the 1641 but there's no 1864 in there but thrre is a 1862. That was not a Kohler command was it?

Post some pics. The vac line for the fuel pump comes off the front of the engine near the oil filter.

You may want to take a look at this thread about the 1864 I picked up. You will probably need to do many of the same things with your new toy.

Ok, then that's the one I need then. It's just hanging loose in there. The fuel pump is bad, and the PO bungeed a small metal gas tank to the firewall and used it as a gravity feed. I'm going to replace the fuel pump and put it back together the right way. I think since I have the 1641 I will just take my time and go over the 1864 top to bottom before I move the 48" deck over to the 1864 and decide if I'm going to keep the 1641 or not. The engine looks a little wet around the valve covers also, so maybe I'll just get in there and put new gaskets and seals, etc. Having that vacuum line open and loose worries me a little that it could have sucked dirt in.

I will post more detailed pictures when I get a chance. I'm just glancing at it and asking a lot of questions, that I probably can just figure out if I take/have the time to really dig in to it.

By the way, I just saw your other post with the link about your 1864. I was just over in Perry County on Friday and needed gas and happened to be right across the street from Perry Power Equipment.

The picture from your post #69 on that thread, http://www.onlycubcadets.net/forum/a...1&d=1483389668 I see the vacuum line setup so now I know what it should be. That valve cover on mine that has the oil fill has what look like vacuum ports, one on each side with a plastic/rubber cap over them (so they aren't used if that's what they are). I don't see those in your pictures. I am not at home, I am at work currently but I did some google image searches and found one that looks like what I have from an ebay image. It looks like this: images.jpg

One problem is solved. I put a new battery on it and it turns right over. I was trying to start it from jumper cables to my car last night and I guess it wasn't enough power.

New (used/good) fuel pump installed, and I found the fuel valve to be rusted tight and I found the hard way the rubber grommet was shot. So I pulled it all out and replaced it with good spare ones I had and it runs perfect. Here is a picture of my valve cover I had mentioned.

Everything is coming up aces now, I just need to give it a bath and change fluids and filters.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
