Default S/g belt on 149
We have a 149 that we are using a tiller with. We are able to run about half an hour then the s/g belt breaks. The s/g pulley turns freely. It seems like the muffler is very close to the belt and heats it up. We are using a Napa 3L320W belt. The motor was recently overhauled. Has anyone had this problem before? We don't want to keep buying belts if they keep breaking. Do we need to be using Cub/IH belts only? Otherwise it's an awesome machine! Thank you

If the muffler is getting hot enough to burn the belt then I would guess the motor is overheating, there's probably a mouse nest in the blower housing which is keeping the fan from cooling the engine. I would pull the engine and pull the tins and give it a good cleaning. The other option is that the carb is set to lean but I would pull the tins and clean before I went adjusting the carb. If the engine has been running that hot it's probably a safe bet that the head gasket has blown, that repair is pretty easy while the engine is out and the tins are off. I copied this from the other thread and it has all the info you need, the issue is not the muffler being to close to the belt but most likely the engine overheating.
