Default Cub 149 no spark

Working on a new to me 149 that didn't run when I purchased it. Looks like it has sat outside a few years. First thing was to crank it and it turns over with compression. I had the jumper cables connected to the battery and it turned over fine. After a few cranks, now it won't turn over. Not even connecting to the big cable on the SG and grounded. The motor turns over by hand fine with compression. Also it doesn't get any spark at the plug. So I filed the points and still nothing, but I do get a spark at the points. That was all the time I had. Any suggestions? Unfortunately I won't get to it again for a little while.

Did some reading on the forum. This has me stumped after today. First thing I addressed was the starter generator was turning over and stopped. Took it off and found it filled with rusty water. Installed another good one and now she turns over. Still no spark so I did the normal file the points and still nothing. Did some switching of parts to known good ones-condenser, spark plug, and coil and the plug wire. Still nothing. Hmmm
I just got this tractor and don't know anything about it except it didn't run according to the people. They said it will run with some easy work since the engine isn't locked up. I then took a look at the voltage regulator and it has been recently replaced. Guess they were trying to get it going too. There are 4 wires suppose to be attached and it only has 3. The one missing is the "L" wire. Can't find it in the harness except there is a bare wire that looks broken off. Any ideas??
I also rebuilt the nasty carb and it has a stuck float or mis adjusted since its overflowing. Ajusted the float lower so hopefully that will take care of that!!

The v-reg does not use the "L" terminal on that tractor.

*Did you check to see that the coil is getting power to it?
*When you crank on it, put a test light on the coil at the (-) terminal and see if it flashes when the points open and close.
*Did you check the timing? Maybe the points aren't adjusted correctly....

From your description of your "testing" it sounds like you just swapped parts around guessing.... and you didn't even list what parts you tried switching. So, until you do some testing, not much we can tell you other than give you a mile long list of possibilities, or you ask a specific question. "Why won't it run?" is kind of a broad topic.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
