Default PTO on a 782 problem

About 2 years ago, I picked up a 782 that has a M-18 that looks like it came out of a craftsman gt6000. After lots of work to the engine and lots of help from members here, I have the engine running great with no leaks. I really only use it to haul the cart around with firewood an such. Last week I decided to give my 682 a break from mower duty an give it some needed repairs. So the problem I have is when I turn on the PTO switch the amp gauge jumps to discharge an stays there till I turn the PTO off. Yesterday I put on a new voltage rectifier an turned the PTO on 6 or 7 times an it worked fine. So today I was going to install the mower deck an go to town mowing. But before I did that I tried the PTO again an now back to the same problem. At this point I have no idea.

You mostly likely have a intermittent wiring issue. I am suspecting somewhere between the Reverse Relay and the PTO itself. I am guessing a wire rubbing to a ground spot, creating a short.

Thanks Roland. I should also mention that when I got this tractor all the safety switches must have been removed cause I can start the engine with without the brake being depressed. The switch under the seat is gone if that would change things

You make NO mention of the Chassis Serial Number. There are two different wiring diagrams for the 782. Thus my statement is a General Statement without knowing the specifics.

the serial # is 2050601u729612 I did mention that this was a repower. There is a kill switch that needs to be on before the key will work. But I do know the po used this to mow for many years till the day I picked it up. So I agree there must be a short some where.

OK, you have the CCC built 782. That tractor incorporates a Reverse Relay to engage the PTO. Like I said before, sounds like an intermittent short in the "Black" wire from the PTO back to this relay. Take some time and examine this wire to see if there are some "rub spots" in the wire.

I had the same problem with a couple cub cadets I've owned. One was a short under the dash, the last one I had sounded exactly like what you have. I disconnected the wiring connector that goes to the PTO field coil. When I disconnected it and engaged the PTO and there was no excessive current being drawn. This told me the short was located in the PTO field coil itself and not in the rest of the machine. On a 782 I had to replace the coil. On a 1512 I had, the shorted PTO coil was shorted to ground right where the wire went into the coil. Since on this machine the PTO uses 2 leads, I took a gamble and swapped the polarity of the two wires as they entered the PTO at the connector on the PTO side so 12V was now applied to the line that was formerly ground and the other lead that was formerly supplied with 12V (and was shorted to ground) was now supplied with ground. The PTO worked fine with no problems after the change for the next 3 years, until I needed to take it apart and change the bearing on the PTO. The coil was replaced at the same time.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
