My vote is to pull the engine and repower........ once complete send the old engine to me since my 682 kt17 threw a rod.
 I agree though, sounds like a carb / fuel issue. Did you ever loosen the fuel cap like suggested to see if the vent is plugged causing fuel flow to stop?

I buy mine form local auto part stores. In my case O'Reilly's. They carry Prime Line. If you have a local store and they can't help you, I can get you the part number.
Zippy is also correct.... I just don't like paying the price MTD wants for a kit. The internet (ebay/amazon) is probably the cheapest place to buy. You should be spending about $15 give or take depending on shipping.

76 posts in, I have not read all of them thoroughly, has anyone suggested maybe a clogged petcock? My 1864 did something similar when on a hill when the gas would go to the left or right (can't remember which way) and the engine would cut out and die. 782 has one though, the 1864 has two, one on each side. One of mine was clogged, so when the tractor leaned it would starve and shut off. I took it apart and cleaned it and the problem went away. Might be worth looking at. You might be getting gas through enough to start it and run it for a while but if partially clogged it could starve for gas after burning what's in the line. If you haven't looked at that yet, do that before rebuilding the carb. All you need is a new rubber bung for the gas tank, they only cost a few dollars.

Last night I removed and cleaned the tank. Fresh gas. Good steady supply of known good new fuel to the carb. Got it running with a little tinkering. Ran out of daylight, ( currently I have my shop torn apart for an addition) so my desire to keep working on it ran out.
Tonight I'll take the carb off completely and start over. I don't really like buying parts from the stealership. I was wondering where to elsewhere and pick one up. O'Reillys sounds good to me.
