Hello everyone, I have a LTX1050 KH from 2012, with a SV725 engine.
Last year, so much grass seed accumulated on top of the engines air intake that it over-heated. To the point that the throttle cable slipped out of adjustment. This year, it's really sensitive to this and I have to check frequently (about 3 hours mowing), and it's started to blow smoke when it gets hot. Today it's blowing oil onto the inside faces of both front wheels, and I need to figure out what to do. I'm assuming that the head gaskets are blown, and maybe the heads are warped or cracked. I'd like to get some parts on the way before I start taking this apart if anyone could give me some educated opinions on what to check or replace. I do auto repair, so I should be up to this, but I like to know as much as I can. I do have the service manual for the engine as well. I promise to keep you informed of my progress. Thanks, Mike |

Welcome to OCC
What your describing is a common tail from those model units. I would consider myself lucky to get 7 years out of one of them especially with a lawn that takes 3 hours to cut. Sounds like you got your money's worth out of it. If you were really inclined to repair that tractor, a new or used replacement engine would be the way to go about it. Typically those engines are not worth rebuilding. And even more typically that model tractor is not worth putting an engine into Now with all that said. Its your money, time, Tractor. You NEVER pre order parts for an engine before diagnosis. If ya want to spent 500$ 600$ bucks, "which is less than cost of a good rebuild" I would go on craigslist and find a nice older cub cadet GT for $300 and hold onto $200 to fix up, replace belts, battery, etc. Then you would have something worth keeping long term. Just my opinion. Once again Welcome

Don't preorder parts as said before. Investigate first. I'm not sure what you meant by cleaning the air intake....air cleaner? Or did you pull the tins off motor and make sure cooling fins are not blocked. I would also check with manual and make sure that the correct oil is being used and be sure that it is neither low on oil or over-filled. If you are using incorrect oil, such as lighter weight, can increase oil consumption. Also be sure you are not running lean on fuel.

Thanks for the quick replies. it's disappointing to hear that this is so typical, but it is MTD after all. Well I have nothing to lose, so I guess I'll see what I can do for it short term. I can't afford to replace it that's for sure.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
