I ordered a true spirol pin from the internet...not a hardware store buy. Best to heat up the pin before installing it?

Good Grief NO! They are talking about heating the area of the old pin to drive it, or the remains of it out more easily. DO NOT heat the new pins before installing. DO solidify the drive shaft in some way, such as a block of wood to support it against the hammering of the pin going in. Make sure you have all the holes lined up as the pin goes in.

Well, you never know what someone might try Roland!!! We've all done our fair share of stupid antics, I'm sure. It certainly does make it interesting, you're right.....as I recall, when I saw flames dripping from my carb on a cold winter's night.

I've always wondered if a palm nailer would help installing a roll pin. Might have to give it a try sometime. Perhaps less jarring than a deadblow hammer.
