Planning on buying and rebuilding old school Cub Cadet this winter. They do not last long on CL so I need to act fast when they do appear. I have noticed that these tractors are tough as nails from engine to rear wheels. My main use for this will be mowing and it seems to me the decks do not hold up as well as the tractors and the quality of the cut is not optimal. 1 acre yard, mostly flat. Are those observations accurate? Also, I restored several 60’s cars. Love to drag rust buckets home, spend a year or two on them, sell them for much less than I have in them but loved every minute of working on them. Same virus for Cub’s?

Welcome to OCC ! You will find a wealth of info here to help you with your first cub, the next couple cubs will get easier ! I like the late 60's early 70's tractors the wide frames from the early 70's are a little easier to work on with the removable tunnel cover but I like the late 60's triangle shaped decks better than the later decks, I just think they cut better ! The thing with the decks is to clean them good at the end of the season ,slap a coat of rustoleum on the underside and keep the baffle/deflector in place on the underside, most of them need replacing and are easily fabbed at home. Some will say the baffle isn't needed but I think it cuts better with it ,just my opinion and I've been running these cubs since the mid 60's ! They are pretty much bulletproof and where built to last a lifetime ! happy cub searching !

First welcome to OCC......

As far as quality of cut, your assessment is correct. They did not have the "high tip speeds" back in the day. IF..........cut quality is a major factor, then buy something new.

I will weigh in on the mower deck and cutting. My 1969 126 with original triangle deck cuts great and has had no rust holes ever. Still extremely solid. The only thing I did was install new baffle which is common on these. Also I replaced blades with good quality American made blades. It cuts extremely well in tall grass to short. As Roland had stated the tip speed on some of the older decks is a bit slower. However, with the short outer blades on the triangle deck and the larger center blade it does really well. When I am forced to cut in tall wet conditions, My 126 is still my first choice even over my higher horsepower and larger deck machines.

Looks like mowing decks just need some dialing in for good cutting. I know I have not been keeping up with proper deck adjustments and maintenance on my newer Cub. Thanks for insight.

Welcome to OCC. I agree that the square end triangle decks cut nice. The early cast end decks have very short outer blades so the blade tip speed isn’t the greatest. On the 48” triangle deck, the outer blades are nearly the same length as the center blade.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
