Sounds like a PTO issue. You can remove the PTO & observe for "wear & tear", see if something fell into it, and/or look for damage.

If the motor runs fine without the PTO, then you know it is positively a PTO issue.

If I take the PTO off, can I use the tractor without it for a while without damaging anything?

Your PTO may need to be adjusted. Look at page 2-81 in the service manual https://www.onlycubcadets.net/forum/...ead.php?t=4644

I had to do this on my 1000 for the same reason. It was easy to do and the metal on metal noise went away when it was completed.

X2 what Bob 95065 said my 1200 did that a couple years ago out of the blue and adjusting it helped. Be aware though it may not take much mine was a very very slight movement. Best of luck getting it going again.

Thanks for the suggestions. I adjusted it a couple months ago when I changed the oil seal. I already took it off, but I’ll get it back on one day and readjust it and see if it goes away. I don’t see any obvious wear or damage.

I ran it for two and a half hours tonight plowing snow. It ran much better, and even seemed to start easier and have more power. I’m thinking the head may have been cracked since before I got it.
