Here is a evil pray listing on used starters.
Does yours look like this after you reassembled it?
I'm still thinking you have the steel housing either end for end or 1/2 turn off.
But I have been wrong.
Listing number:
201663021577
Also google anything you can on wiring schematics/wiring diagrams for your sled if you haven't already.
EDIT:
look at the alignment marks in picture 5 (enlarge it) on the aluminum gear end housing where it mates to the steel field housing.
Verify you assembled it that way.
I found a diagram, it is hooked up right. That does look like my starter. I didn’t have the housing off, only the end cap. I’m going to double check everything later today.

Make sure you have the end cap orientation you had off, correct as it might affect rotation, but not sure.
prolly will if the end cap has the brushes in it prolly not if they are in the housing.
Best of luck, it is frustrating as hell

I’ll check it and let you know what I find.

My starter does not have the marks like the one in the link you posted. The parts can only fit one way, there are tabs that have to line up. I took the case off, that only fits one way too. I knocked one of the wires off the brush, I’ll have to get it soldered before I can do anymore testing. I’ll play with it again tomorrow.

I got it fixed. The case was 90* off, you have to line up the tab then twist it which I didn't realize at first. Not sure why it was off as I never took the case off, I must have done it without noticing.

Thank you for the help. I put it back together tonight. It’s running good, I just have to adjust the choke cable and that should be all. Now we just need some snow, but it’s not looking like we’re going to get much more this year.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
