Alrighty! We are back in business. I got the PTO via FedEx on Friday and installed it Friday night (after I sprayed the package down with Lysol). I put it on, connected the wiring, torqued it down and did a quick test with the belt off. It worked!! Yay!
On Sun, I pulled it out and cut the grass so it is now in working condition again. One thing I did have happen, though, is if the engine isn't warmed up, engaging the PTO kills the engine (slows down, stutters, and dies before it can recover). I was able to pull the choke half out and that allowed it to successfully engage AND stay running. Once the motor is warm, it works without issue. I made some adjustments to the belt tension and it worked fantastic. I suspect its about time for a tune-up. In fact, its probably WAAAAY past time for one. About all I have ever done is change the oil over the years. Not sure what all I need to do to get it back to running in tip-top shape. Any suggestions? |

I have to up the idle when I engage the PTO on both my 1641 and my 2264 or it will kill the engine. The V-twins just don't seem to have the flywheel effect that they old horizontal twins had.

Also it is just good sense to not work a cold engine.
Treat a engine like one would a woman, warm her up and the results will always be much better

True dat! But, it used to work fine. I guess its just like a woman in that respect as well - older she gets the longer it takes to warm up and be ready to go! LOL

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
