To AThomas, Finn and Ironman-
What a great day with the Cub. First I found that my hydro, for some reason, has ONE manual valve, One automatic, and a release lever that is built to depress just the one manual valve. The manual valve was very frozen. So I pulled them both very carefully, using compressed air to ensure that no debris was going to fall down the holes. Note- I found no leaking fluid and that liquid in the pic is WD40. (see pic). With some coaxing and steel wool and WD40 I was able to get the manual one moving freely. The outside looked bad, but the inside and the O-rings still looked great. Just for fun I made sure that the automatic one was working too. I reached in with a very small (and dulled) screwdriver and gently moved the inner workings up and down. Then I coated the tops with a thin layer of lithium grease, and installed them as before. NOW IT ROLLS in "neutral" position! This is a good thing. Then I moved on to tracing the electrical. I did not really want to dissassemble the dash panel, so with the gas tank off I was able to see a lot. And sure enough, the BATT terminal on the ignition switch had completely broken off. It must have been barely hanging on, and my compressed air gun ripped it off. So although I DO have a used ignition switch (and complete harness) at a friends house, I though I would try crafting a new terminal first. (see pic) I cleaned the points, reassembled everything with dialectric grease, and she fired up so strong! I am still having some concerns about the original starter generator, but fingers crossed. Today I drove around for about twenty minutes after greasing all the points, and it was great. So I am hopeful. I thank you so much for your advice again. |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
