engine backfires when trying to start
Well, I wasn't thinking when I put the dowel rod in the spark plug hole. The only thing it was touching was the block.
 So the valves are moving up and down. I will put everything back together and see what happens. THANKS to everyone for your help and comments.

When looking thru the side plate, you will most likely always see the tappets move up and down off the cam. I don't know that the tapets ever stick.
But watch the actual valve shafts themselves to see if they are moving. That is where the sticking takes place because the shafts and guides get rusty when an engine has sat for a length of time.

I had same problem in my 147. Stuck exhaust valve. Someone told me certain oil can do it, I dont know. I took it apart. I soaked valve to loosen it up. I had a hard time getting valve out. Finally got it out. Cleaned the stem and checked the seats. Valve seems good now. Checked the clearance in the guide, with in specs. The engine was never apart, I was told.
